Our Approach

STrategies for English Language Learning and Reading (STELLAR)

STELLAR aims to strengthen children’s language oracy and literacy skills and to promote a positive attitude towards English Language learning in their foundational years (STELLAR, 2008).

The English Language Syllabus 2020 for the Primary level focuses on the development, reinforcement and extension of language skills in the primary years through an enjoyment of the language and the promotion of extensive reading; and leveraging oracy, reading and writing skills to develop knowledge and independent use of the language.

EL Syllabus 2020 seeks to develop these competencies in our learners through the teaching and learning of EL to enable them to be Empathetic Communicators, Discerning Readers and Creative Inquirers.

Our Programmes

Languages Fiesta @ KCS

To immerse students in the use of language, the English Department organises various activities to arouse students’ interest in the English Language through reading, listening, speaking and writing for Languages Fiesta.

With a week full of language activities, students will be immersed in the wonders of the English Language, As they say with languages, you are at home anywhere!

Our teachers transformed into the colourful crayons from The Day the Crayons Quit, making reading come alive through creativity, laughter, and a love for books.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar was hungry for one more thing - great books!

Novel Reading Programme

The middle primary NOVEL programme aims to encourage a greater love for reading books beyond the STELLAR curriculum. Narratives Of Very Exciting Lessons take place as students read extensively and view digital media through SLS lessons as well as engage in fun post-reading activities in class. Analysing linguistic features and popular storybook characters give our students an early introduction to the literary world of fiction and non-fiction books.

Our Support Programmes

P1 and P2 Learning Support Programme (LSP)

P3 and P4 School-based Dyslexia Remediation Programme (SDR)

P3 to P5 Reading Remediation Programme (RRP)

These programmes provide additional support for our students who are weak in their basic literacy and reading skills. The content and instructional methods are catered to these students and helmed by teachers who are specially trained to conduct these specialised programmes. Due to their small class sizes, the students receive more attention and help from their teachers, enabling them to learn better, boosting their confidence in the process.

Our Stretch Programmes

P4 and P5 Reading Circles

Reading Circles aims to engage advanced readers to help them to extend their experience of the world through exposure to a range of age-appropriate rich texts (fiction and non-fiction). Through collective inquiry, students respond with authentic connections to the texts and their worlds they meet, and to develop capacity for imagination, perspective-taking and empathy.

Working in small groups, students discussed key events, characters, and themes from their texts, developing critical thinking, communication, and collaborative learning skills in an engaging and supportive environment.

Sharing stories, exchanging ideas, and discovering the joy of reading - one page at a time.

P5 Creative Writing Programme

Students who show interest and aptitude in creative writing are selected to submit a portfolio of their writing to apply for a Creative Writing Programme conducted by MOE. This programme aims to help our budding writers hone their writing skills and nurture their love for the language. Selected students participate in a 3-day non-residential camp to learn writing techniques taught by published writers.

P5 Wits and Words Debate Enrichment

The Wits and Words Debate enrichment is tailored for our Primary 5 high-ability learners. It is designed to sharpen the oral competencies, critical thinking, and persuasive reasoning of verbally talented students. Students have an opportunity to participate in an inter-school debate championship and gain exposure to the dynamics of competitive debating in an authentic setting.
